Family background Pre NRLM: Pi R.Vanlalzuali after marriage settled in Reiek Vilage. Their main source of income was her father-in law’s salary as her husband was unemployed. Her father in law being a Forest Guard under the Forest Department of the Govt of Mizoram earned just enough to provide for the family which ultimately resulted in poverty. Their level of poverty increased further after having children and they would even borrow money on a regular basis just to get by. Life was difficult.

Family background Post NRLM: When NRLM was introduced in Reiek Village in the form of SRLM, she along with other friends decided to join the SHG network. After joining the SHG network she took all available loans from SHG and Bank amounting to Rs. 7,90,000/- and started her Restaurant and Home Stay business at Reiek which is a very famous Tourist destination in Mizoram. For her Home Stay business, she had undergone training conducted by Mizoram SRLM in convergence with AirBnB where she learnt the basic skills for operating Home Stay.

As per her own words, she said “Before starting my own business and before joining SHG, we had to rely on my parent (in-laws) for each and everything which as grownup was very intimidating and shameful but however after starting our own business our life has changed for the better. Today we can provide for our children without having to borrow from anyone, we are repaying our loan on a regular basis and also to highlight that I never owned a pass book or an ATM card before, now I owned a pass book, an ATM card and have regular savings which is purely due to the SHG network, thus I am truly grateful, our lives had turned around”.
